Ellen Bryant Voigt was born and raised on a farm in Virginia and came to Vermont in 1969. She is the author of nine collections of poetry, most recently The Collected Poems (2023), Headwaters (2013), and Messenger: New and Selected Poems 1976-2006 (2007). Voigt’s honors include awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets, and the O. B. Hardison, Jr. Prize from the Folger Shakespeare Library. She has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim and MacArthur foundations, among other institutions. In 1976, at Goddard College, Voigt developed and directed the nation’s first low-residency writing program, and later helped guide its reincarnation as the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College. She has taught at Iowa Wesleyan College and MIT, and has served as a visiting writer at many colleges and universities. Voigt has served as a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets and as the Vermont State Poet. She now lives in Cabot, Vermont and St. Paul, Minnesota.
