While the presence of Surrealism as a movement and an artistic allegiance—and, even, an ideology—is muted and more or less marginal in contemporary culture, its impact on the art of the past hundred years has been enormous and incalculable. In this three-hour seminar, we will (not necessarily in this order) define and redefine Surrealism, do some Surrealist poetic exercises to give ourselves a sense of the inner impulses of the movement, and look at the many ways in which the Surrealist project has exerted a large, and sometimes preponderant, influence on recent and contemporary American poetry.

Vijay Seshadri is the author of five collections of poems: Wild Kingdom, The Long Meadow, The Disappearances, 3 Sections, and That Was Now, This Is Then; and many essays, reviews, and memoir fragments. His work has been recognized with a number of honors, including the Pulitzer Prize for poetry. He teaches at Sarah Lawrence College.
