Now Hiring: Program and Development Associate
The Poetry Society of America, the nation’s oldest nonprofit poetry organization, seeks a highly motivated individual to support both the program and development departments of this growing literary organization.
Founded in 1910, the Poetry Society of America places poetry at the crossroads of American life. The PSA transforms public spaces into sites for imaginative encounters with poems, engages diverse and often underserved communities, amplifies the voices of poets around issues of common concern, and honors their aesthetic contributions to our lives. The PSA’s major programs include Poetry in Motion, Poems on Wheels, a prestigious collection of annual awards, and live and digital programs featuring hundreds of poets each year.
The Program and Development Associate will work with the Deputy Director on a variety of programs, including the PSA’s annual awards, readings and talks, digital features, and public poetry projects, such as Poetry in Motion. They will also work with the Development Director on membership, special events, and the PSA’s annual benefit. Tasks will include managing the awards program, conducting poetry research, event production, copyediting poems and essays for the PSA website, maintaining the membership database, and posting to social media, as well as general office duties such as data entry and mailings.
The ideal candidate will combine a deep knowledge of poetry with excellent office skills and an attention to detail. They must be hard working, eager to learn, and keen to contribute to the workings of a small, friendly, and efficient office. Specific qualifications include:
• B.A. in English or BFA Creative Writing (M.A. or MFA preferred)
• Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of contemporary poetry
• Experience working in an office, ideally in a nonprofit organization
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including copyediting experience
• Ability to multitask, working both independently and in collaboration with others in a small, dynamic office environment
• Excellent computer skills. Experience working with databases, content management systems, and social media platforms a plus
Salary and Benefits
Starting salary of $45,000, with competitive benefits and generous vacation policy.
This position is temporarily remote with the opportunity to work in-person in the main New York City office alongside other staff when it’s determined safe to do so.
