A TRIBUTE TO MARIANNE MOORE

Address

Brooklyn, NY,

Marianne Moore's New Collected Poems recently published by Farrar Straus & Giroux is a landmark edition of the work of one of the major innovators of poetic modernism. The editor Heather Cass White joins Margo Jefferson, Timothy Donnelly, Maureen N. McLane, and Eleanor Chai to read favorite poems from the new collection. The evening also includes actors Patrick Breen and Maria Tucci reading excerpts from the correspondence Moore conducted with the scrupulously diplomatic representative from the Ford Motor Company, which invited her suggestions for its new line of car. (The company bemusedly resisted these, including Utopian Turtletop, and named the car Edsel after one of Henry Ford's sons.) Highlights from Moore's collaboration with Cassius Clay on his album I Am the Greatest will also be featured, and the evening will include members of the Brooklyn Art Song Society performing two songs Virgil Thompson set to Moore poems.

At 6: 30 PM, we welcome you to join us at the Camperdown Elm in Prospect Park and spend some time admiring the tree while reading Moore's poem "The Camperdown Elm."

This is a Brooklyn Book Festival Bookend Event.

Presented in collaboration with the Brooklyn Public Library, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and Prospect Park Alliance.

Free and open to the public.
