“Reading Garbage: A. R. Ammons and the Long Poem” is an introduction to the life and work of an uncategorizable poet, as well as an invitation to consider how impressions, sensations, and images are registered in a long poem. This workshop/reading group hybrid is equally suited for the poet who is currently working with a long form and the one who is curious about where to begin. Close readings of Ammons’s longer poems, Garbage and Tape for the Turn of the Year, along with early and shorter poems, will provide the basis for discussion, followed by an informal workshop of long-form poems in progress.

Alan Felsenthal is the author of Hereafter and Lowly. He is the editor of Bookworm: Conversations with Michael Silverblatt and the coeditor, with Ben Estes, of A Dark Dreambox of Another Kind: The Poems of Alfred Starr Hamilton. Felsenthal has taught at Columbia University and currently teaches poetry in the humanities department at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering. He is also the copublisher at The Song Cave, a nonprofit press.
