These poems stood out, in an amazingly rich pool of submissions, first, because of the way they manage to be spare and, at the same time, speak volumes. Polyvocality and the visual are both used brilliantly in service of rewriting the master narratives with which they are concerned. The reader is compelled by a voice that is straightforward yet subtle, stark yet eloquent, matter-of-fact yet metaphysical. Lexically, referentially, conceptually, and with a painful and telling irony, these poems make a feast of a famine.
