In this two-session seminar, Kaveh Akbar will illuminate lineages and histories of spiritual poetry, drawing on ancient Mesopotamian, Sumerian, Chinese, Greek, Roman, and Islamic traditions and tracing a line to present-day devotional verse through Emily Dickinson, Octavio Paz, Ingeborg Bachmann, Lucille Clifton, Jean Valentine, and Mahmoud Darwish, among other Modern and contemporary luminaries. In this seminar, participants can expect to read and discuss and write in roughly equal proportion.

Kaveh Akbar is the author of the novel Martyr! (Knopf 2024) and two books of poetry, Pilgrim Bell (Graywolf 2021) and Calling a Wolf a Wolf (Alice James 2017). He is also the editor of The Penguin Book of Spiritual Verse: 110 Poets on the Divine.
